Dhaka, Oct 30 (V7N)- United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, announced that the independent UN Fact-Finding Mission, tasked with investigating the July-August uprising atrocities in Bangladesh, is likely to finalize its report by the beginning of December. Türk shared this update during a meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at Tejgaon on Wednesday.

Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam informed reporters of the meeting details at a briefing held at the Foreign Service Academy that evening. The UN rights chief briefed the Chief Adviser on the mission's progress, discussing his engagements with various Bangladeshi officials, including advisors, the army chief, reform commission leaders, students, and other government representatives.

In addition to the fact-finding mission's progress, Türk reviewed the work of Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal and ongoing investigations into crimes against humanity that occurred during the revolution. He also highlighted efforts by the Inquiry Commission, which is probing numerous cases of enforced disappearances under the former dictatorship, stating that his office continues to support this initiative.

Türk urged Professor Yunus to enhance the independence and functionality of the National Human Rights Commission. He also noted the UN rights agency’s interest in bolstering its operational presence in Dhaka.

Expressing appreciation for the UN’s involvement, Professor Yunus emphasized Bangladesh’s commitment to safeguarding human rights while fostering development. He assured that the current government is dedicated to preventing the recurrence of past mistakes and human rights abuses.

Discussions also covered the Rohingya refugee crisis, with Türk emphasizing the need for greater international assistance and sustained efforts to address the issue. The Chief Adviser sought UN backing to establish a safe zone in Myanmar’s Rakhine state to protect displaced persons near their home regions. Both leaders called for active ASEAN engagement to drive a sustainable regional solution.
