Dhaka, Nov 24 (V7N) — Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin and four newly appointed Election Commissioners officially took their oaths of office today. Chief Justice Syed Refat Ahmed administered the swearing-in ceremony, which was held at the Judges' Lounge of the Supreme Court at 1:30 PM.

The new Election Commission, formed last Thursday, includes:

Chief Election Commissioner: Retired Secretary AMM Nasir Uddin

Election Commissioners:

Former Additional Secretary Md. Anwarul Islam Sarkar

Retired District and Sessions Judge Abdur Rahman Masud

Retired Joint-Secretary Begum Tahmida Ahmad

Brigadier General (Retd.) Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah

The appointments were made following recommendations by a six-member search committee led by Justice Zubair Rahman Chowdhury of the Appellate Division. The committee, formed on October 29, 2024, reviewed potential candidates and submitted a shortlist of 10 names to the President's office last Wednesday.

The newly formed commission replaces the Kazi Habibul Awal-led Election Commission, which collectively resigned on September 5, 2024, leaving the office vacant for three and a half months.

The restructured Election Commission is now tasked with overseeing and ensuring free, fair, and credible elections in Bangladesh.
