Dhaka, Dec 12 (V7N)- The Director General (DG) of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), AKM Shahidur Rahman, has stated that the organization will accept the decision if the government decides to abolish RAB. He also issued a formal apology to the families affected by RAB's controversial actions in the past, including allegations of enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and torture.
Speaking at a press conference at the RAB Media Center in Karwan Bazar, Shahidur Rahman addressed various allegations and outlined reforms being undertaken to rebuild public trust.
Addressing Allegations of Human Rights Violations
The RAB DG acknowledged allegations of "mirror houses" being used for unlawful detentions and interrogations. He confirmed that the facilities remain intact as the Disappearance and Murder Commission continues its investigations. He assured that any RAB member found guilty of abusing their position for personal gain would face strict punitive measures.
“There are allegations of disappearance and murder against RAB, but such incidents will not happen again. We are committed to a fair investigation and trial for these cases to ensure justice,” Rahman stated.
Accountability and Recent Actions
In the past four months, action has been taken against 16 RAB members implicated in robbery, extortion, and other criminal activities. Furthermore, RAB has arrested 353 individuals during July and August in its effort to maintain law and order.
While acknowledging improvements in the law and order situation, the DG admitted that public expectations remain unmet.
Commitment to Reforms
Rahman emphasized RAB’s commitment to transparency and reform, aiming to prevent future violations. "We deeply regret the pain caused to the families of victims and apologize for the actions of some of our members," he said.
As the discourse around RAB's role in society continues, the organization’s leadership appears to be taking steps to address past wrongs while signaling openness to broader institutional changes.
