London, UK, Jan 06, (V7N) – Tulip Siddiq, a UK Minister from the ruling Labour Party, has been found to have lived in a flat in Hampstead, North London, provided to her family for free. This follows a report published on Sunday by The Sunday Times, which also revealed that the flat was initially given to Siddiq’s sister, Azmina, by a close associate of Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina.
Tulip, who serves as the Economic Secretary at the UK Treasury, is responsible for overseeing financial crime and corruption. She is also the daughter of Sheikh Rehana, the sister of Bangladesh's former authoritarian Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina. The report mentioned that the flat was transferred to Azmina in 2009 by a Bangladeshi lawyer named Moin Gani, who has ties to Hasina’s government.
Siddiq has faced scrutiny due to her family’s involvement in acquiring several properties, including free apartments. Despite allegations, Siddiq has consistently denied any wrongdoing. The UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, has expressed confidence in her integrity.
The Hampstead flat, which Siddiq listed as her address from 2012 onwards, was eventually sold by Azmina in 2021 for £650,000. It was previously given to Azmina when she was just 18 and about to attend Oxford University. Tulip Siddiq, however, used the address in various official capacities during her political career, including when she was appointed as a director at the Working Men's College in December 2012 and later as a trustee of Camden Arts Centre in 2014.
The property has since been linked to the controversial connections between Bangladesh's political figures and real estate dealings in the UK. The question of whether Siddiq benefitted from these arrangements has raised concerns, especially following allegations of corruption and financial malpractice tied to her family’s connections in Bangladesh.
Moreover, Siddiq currently resides in a £2.1 million mansion in Finchley, North London, rented from a company owned by Abdul Karim Najim, a senior member of the UK branch of the Awami League, Bangladesh’s ruling party. This connection has fueled further suspicion, particularly given Najim’s ties to Sheikh Hasina’s administration.
Siddiq’s family also reportedly owns multiple properties, including a £1.2 million home in Golders Green, North London, linked to Sheikh Hasina’s associate, Sayan Rahman. These revelations come amid ongoing investigations by Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission into the Siddiq family's financial dealings.
Tulip Siddiq has refused to comment on the specifics of the Hampstead flat, but sources close to her have stated that living in the flat was a common arrangement for many families.
Despite the controversies surrounding her property dealings, Tulip Siddiq continues to deny all accusations of corruption and maintains that she has not engaged in any unlawful activities.
