The Dhaka Metropolitan Police has implemented a comprehensive traffic restriction plan for the upcoming 12th National Assembly elections on January 7, as outlined in an official circular signed by DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman on January 5.
The directive imposes a ban on the movement of certain vehicles in the DMP area from 12 midnight on January 6 to 12 midnight on January 7. Notably, taxi cabs, pickups, microbuses, and trucks fall under this prohibition. Motorcycles are additionally restricted from Friday, January 5, at 12:00 pm until Monday, January 8, at 12:00 pm.
However, the restrictions come with well-defined exceptions. Vehicles associated with law enforcement, armed forces, administration, and authorized observers are permitted to operate. Furthermore, exemptions are granted for vehicles engaged in emergency services, transporting medicines, healthcare supplies, goods, newspapers, and those involved in airport transportation for relatives, long-distance travel, or local commuting, albeit with certain discounts.
Contesting candidates and their election agents are allowed one vehicle each, contingent on approval and proper identification. Journalists, observers, and motorcycles designated for emergency purposes can travel with the approval of the Returning Officer. Officers, employees, or individuals involved in election work can use motorcycles with the Election Commission's approval.
Additionally, restrictions on key roads, highways, and main connections for entering or exiting Dhaka metropolis will experience temporary relaxation during this period. Vehicles assisting disabled voters are also exempt from the ban, reflecting a thoughtful consideration for inclusivity during the electoral process.
The outlined measures demonstrate a balance between ensuring the smooth functioning of essential services and providing necessary allowances for election-related activities. The inclusion of discounts and exemptions for specific categories of vehicles showcases a nuanced approach to managing the logistical challenges posed by the elections. As the nation prepares for this crucial electoral event, these traffic restrictions stand as a proactive measure to maintain order and security during the electoral proceedings in the Dhaka Metropolitan Police area.
