Dhaka, Mar 03, (V7N )— UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi has emphasized the urgent need for disaster risk reduction in the Rohingya refugee camps, following a devastating landslide that severely impacted displaced communities.
During meetings with Bangladesh government officials and humanitarian partners, Grandi highlighted the critical importance of long-term support to prevent such disasters in the future.
This marks Grandi’s sixth visit to Bangladesh, as UNHCR, in collaboration with the Bangladeshi government and aid agencies, prepares to launch the 2025 Joint Response Plan. The plan will outline the humanitarian needs of the Rohingya refugees and their host communities.
Despite repeated appeals, previous response plans have been underfunded, leaving essential relief efforts struggling to meet growing needs.
“Nowhere more than in the Cox’s Bazar camps is the life-saving role of humanitarian aid clear,” Grandi posted on X, stressing the urgency of sustained international supports.
Meanwhile, Dr. Muhammad Yunus has urged all stakeholders to ensure the success of the upcoming international conference on the Rohingya crisis, calling for stronger global commitments to address both humanitarian and long-term solutions.
As Bangladesh continues to host over one million Rohingya refugees, Grandi’s visit underscores the pressing need for increased funding and strategic planning to safeguard the displaced population from further disasters.
