Dhaka, Apr 30 (V7N) — The United Nations has said that it is prepared to open a humanitarian corridor to deliver food aid to Myanmar’s Rakhine State, but only if both the governments of Bangladesh and Myanmar agree to the initiative.

UN Resident Coordinator in Dhaka, Gwen Lewis, made the remarks in an official statement issued on Wednesday afternoon, expressing deep concern over the worsening humanitarian situation in Rakhine, which has been severely affected by ongoing conflict and displacement.

“The UN remains deeply concerned about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Rakhine. While continuing to support Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, we are also working to strengthen international assistance for Bangladesh as a host country,” the statement said.

However, Lewis clarified that any cross-border humanitarian operation would require formal approval from both Bangladesh and Myanmar. “No aid or relief effort can be launched without the express consent of the relevant governments,” the statement added.

The UN also emphasized that it cannot directly intervene without such bilateral agreements and reiterated its commitment to support efforts that are in line with international humanitarian principles and respect the sovereignty of both nations.

The statement comes amid rising concerns over food insecurity and limited access to aid in Rakhine, where many Rohingya and other ethnic communities remain trapped due to ongoing military conflict and violence.
