Dhaka, Aug 16 (V7N) – The Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB) has strongly condemned recent remarks by government advisor Asif Nazrul regarding the medical profession, describing them as insulting, inappropriate, and harmful to the dignity of doctors.
In a joint statement issued on Saturday, DAB President Professor Dr. Harun Or Rashid and Secretary General Dr. Md. Zahirul Islam Shakil said Nazrul’s comments had “hurt not only the doctors but also the entire health sector.”
Doctors’ Contribution Undermined
The statement emphasized that doctors in Bangladesh have consistently stood by the people during national crises, including the Covid-19 pandemic, natural disasters, and political unrest, often at the cost of their own safety and lives.
“Some of our colleagues have even sacrificed their lives while serving patients in hostile environments with limited resources,” the DAB leaders said. “To deny such contributions and make derogatory remarks is nothing but a deviation from humanity.”
Support During Movements
The association reminded that doctors have provided treatment to injured students and citizens during political movements, mass uprisings, and state crackdowns, despite facing threats and pressure. “Even in the aftermath of bloodshed, doctors have continued their service in the spirit of humanity,” the statement read.
Call for Apology
DAB warned that such comments by a government advisor risk spreading confusion in society, damaging the doctor-patient relationship, and weakening the healthcare system as a whole.
Labeling Nazrul’s statement as “sad and objectionable” to a noble profession, the organization demanded its immediate withdrawal and a public apology.
Commitment to Public Health
Professor Dr. Harun Or Rashid and Dr. Md. Zahirul Islam Shakil reiterated that DAB would remain united in protecting the dignity of doctors. “We will continue to work for the betterment of public health, ensuring accessible medical services, and the welfare of society. But any attempt to devalue the medical profession will be strongly resisted.”
