Dhaka, Aug 18 (V7N) – Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has called upon the people of Bangladesh to work together to increase and protect fish resources, stressing the urgent need to show kindness toward nature.

Speaking at the inauguration of National Fisheries Week 2025, held at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center on Monday morning, Dr. Yunus highlighted the week’s theme: “Building sanctuaries, filling the country with native fish.”

Farmed Fish and Challenges

Dr. Yunus noted that the contribution of farmed fish has grown significantly, with many young entrepreneurs entering the sector. He said farmed fish now play a crucial role in meeting the nation’s protein demand. However, he admitted that making hilsa—the national fish—affordable for the masses remains a major challenge.

“Fish is a gift from nature, a gift from God. Yet we are cruel to nature. If we continue this way, fish may one day disappear,” Yunus warned, stressing the importance of respecting natural ecosystems.

Call for Conservation and Research

He criticized the unchecked dumping of waste into rivers and the lack of serious discussions on river conservation, despite frequent debates on river management.

Dr. Yunus urged the establishment of a robust fisheries industry in Bangladesh, backed by world-class research and international cooperation. He revealed that discussions with friendly nations are underway to develop coastal protection and ensure the sustainable use of aquatic resources.

He cautioned that unplanned infrastructure projects and environmental destruction are threatening both the ecology and public health of the country.

Fisheries Week Awards

On the occasion, the government honored contributors to the fisheries sector with 9 gold medals, 5 silver medals, and 2 bronze medals in various categories.
