Dhaka, Aug 19 (V7N) – The European Union (EU) has pledged €4 million in assistance to the Election Commission (EC) to help ensure that Bangladesh’s upcoming national parliamentary elections meet international standards.
The announcement came from EU Ambassador to Dhaka Michael Miller following a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin at the Election Building in Agargaon on Tuesday morning. The meeting lasted for about an hour and a half, beginning at 11 a.m.
Ambassador Miller said an EU expert team will arrive in Bangladesh next month to assess whether the EU will send election observers. “The EU supports Bangladesh in its transition to democracy,” he said, adding that further discussions will be held with both the Election Commission and the government.
Referring to Bangladesh’s experience in holding elections, Miller noted that questions remain about past polls but expressed hope that the next election will be credible, acceptable, and in line with international standards.
