Dhaka, Nov 21 (V7N) — Bangladesh experienced its strongest earthquake in three decades on Friday morning, with powerful tremors shaking Dhaka and multiple districts across the country. The quake, originating in Madhavadi of Narsingdi, has already claimed at least four lives and caused widespread panic.

According to Rubayet Kabir, Officer-in-Charge of the Earthquake Research Center, today’s 5.7-magnitude earthquake released an energy equivalent to the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. “This is the biggest earthquake in the last 30 years in Bangladesh,” he said.

The quake struck at 10:39 am, prompting thousands of residents to rush out of homes and workplaces. Light tremors were also felt in Kolkata, India, where hanging objects and ceiling fans were seen swaying.

Casualties and Damage

So far, authorities have confirmed four deaths:

  • Three pedestrians were killed in Kasaitali when the railing of a five-story building collapsed. Their bodies were taken to Salimullah Medical College Hospital (Mitford).

  • In Rupganj, Narayanganj, a newborn girl named Fatema died when a wall collapsed during the quake. Her mother, Kulsum Begum, and neighbor Jasmine Begum were injured and later admitted to a local private hospital.

In addition to the casualties, various structural damages have been reported across several districts, though a full assessment is still underway.

Government Response

Professor Muhammad Yunus, Advisor to the Interim Government, said the administration is closely monitoring the overall situation. All relevant departments have been instructed to immediately visit affected areas and evaluate the extent of damage.

Tremors Felt in India

Mild tremors were also experienced in Kolkata and surrounding areas of West Bengal. Residents shared videos online showing people evacuating buildings quickly as household items shook lightly.

As aftershocks remain possible, authorities have urged citizens to remain cautious and follow safety guidelines. Rescue and response teams are currently active in affected zones.
