Dhaka, Dec 14 (V7N) – Professor Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser, conveyed deep sorrow and concern over the casualties among Bangladeshi peacekeepers serving in Sudan after a surprise drone attack by terrorists on a United Nations peacekeeping camp in the Abyei region. Six peacekeepers were killed, and eight others sustained injuries in the incident.
In his statement, the Chief Adviser said he was deeply distressed by the martyrdom of six brave soldiers while fulfilling their noble duty to maintain peace and stability. He noted that Bangladesh’s significant contribution to UN peacekeeping operations is internationally recognized, and the sacrifice of these soldiers is both a matter of national pride and profound grief.
Professor Yunus prayed for the souls of the deceased and extended heartfelt condolences to their bereaved families. He also wished a speedy recovery for the injured peacekeepers. He confirmed that urgent requests have already been made to the United Nations to ensure maximum medical care and support for the wounded. The government of Bangladesh will remain fully committed to supporting the families of the peacekeepers during this difficult time.
The Chief Adviser strongly condemned the terrorist attack, describing it as a grave violation of international peace and humanity. He urged the United Nations and the international community to take effective measures to strengthen the safety and security of peacekeepers.
The statement also highlighted that the Bangladesh government will closely coordinate with the UN to ensure the prompt repatriation of the bodies of the fallen peacekeepers and the provision of proper medical treatment for the injured personnel.
