Chittagong, Jan 06 (V7N)- Election Commissioner (Retd.) Brigadier Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah has urged law enforcement agencies to recover the remaining 15 percent of weapons and 30 percent of ammunition looted during the July 5, 2024 uprising, ahead of the upcoming elections.
He made the remarks at a view-sharing meeting of the Law Enforcement Cell at the Chittagong Circuit House on Tuesday morning. EC Sanaullah emphasized that Rohingya camps and border areas will be sealed to prevent illegal weapons from entering the country in the election period. He also called for the strengthening of check posts and increased vigilance to ensure terrorists cannot move between areas safely.
During the mass uprising on August 5, 2024, following the overthrow of the Awami League government, various police stations, outposts, and vehicles were attacked, vandalized, or set on fire. A total of 5,753 firearms and 651,832 rounds of ammunition were looted. Although a joint operation to recover the stolen arms began on September 4, 2024, a significant portion remains unaccounted for.
EC Sanaullah stressed that the recovery of these weapons is urgent to maintain law and order and ensure a peaceful electoral process.
