DHAKA, March 7, (V7N) - Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said his government is giving top priority to ensuring women’s safety, taking a strict stance against cyber-bullying and online harassment.

“We want to build a Bangladesh where men and women will enjoy equal rights. Women will work in the family, state and society with respect, dignity and security,” the premier said in a message marking International Women’s Day, to be observed tomorrow.

This year’s theme is “Today’s Action, Tomorrow’s Justice, Protect the Rights of Women and Girls.” The day commemorates women’s fight for equality and liberation, focusing on issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and ending violence against women.

The Prime Minister emphasized that sustainable development depends on women’s rights, education, health, security, and participation in nation-building. He said national progress is not possible without women’s inclusion in governance and politics.

Highlighting initiatives, Rahman referred to the launch of the Family Card for women’s economic empowerment, and pledged to introduce free education up to postgraduate level for women, expand digital learning, provide free school uniforms for girls, and modernize education systems in line with electoral pledges.

He also recalled milestones in women’s empowerment, noting that during Shaheed Zia’s regime, the Women’s Affairs Department was established, later upgraded to the Ministry of Women and Children’s Affairs in 1994 under Begum Khaleda Zia. He credited Khaleda Zia with introducing free education for girls up to class 12, calling it a revolutionary step.

The Prime Minister wished success for all programmes undertaken nationwide to mark International Women’s Day, reaffirming his government’s commitment to women’s rights and empowerment.
