DHAKA, May 6, (V7N) — Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has urged the global community to step up assistance for Rohingya refugees, stressing that Bangladesh cannot shoulder the burden alone without sustained international support.

The appeal came during a meeting with Australian High Commissioner Susan Ryle at the Secretariat. Ahmed emphasized the need for increased funding and coordinated international efforts to improve rehabilitation and living conditions in the camps. He highlighted recent government measures, including the first meeting of the national committee on Rohingya camp security held on May 4, noting that law enforcement agencies are actively working to curb crime and drug trafficking.

Discussions covered a wide range of issues:

Humanitarian assistance — Ryle reaffirmed Australia’s continued support and stressed the importance of sustained international engagement.

Irregular migration — Both sides discussed the joint working group addressing migration challenges, with Australia promoting awareness of legal pathways.

Law enforcement cooperation — Talks included policing capacity building, mutual legal assistance, and training initiatives.

Bilateral ties — Upcoming engagements were noted, including the planned visit of the Australian cricket team to Bangladesh.

The minister welcomed Australia’s initiatives and expressed Bangladesh’s interest in expanding regular migration opportunities through skilled workforce deployment.
