DHAKA, May 6 (V7N) — Prime Minister’s Information and Broadcasting Adviser Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman has said that clear policies and a code of conduct are urgently needed for journalism, given the rapid expansion of online and digital media outlets.
Speaking at a press briefing after a session of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry on the final day of the Deputy Commissioners (DC) Conference at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium, Zahed noted that online media can now be launched very easily, but there is a lack of policy in this area. He stressed that the government is taking steps to quickly formulate policies to ensure professional standards and responsibility in journalism.
He added that DCs have proposed setting specific standards and a code of conduct for becoming a journalist, so that both the administration and the media can benefit from professionalism at the field level.
On transparency, Zahed assured that the current government, being democratically elected, will move away from the tendency to conceal information. He announced that the long‑inactive Information Commission will be reconstituted soon and allowed to operate independently to address complaints related to access to information.
The adviser also outlined government plans to tackle rumor prevention and misinformation. A project has already been undertaken to strengthen fact‑checking activities, integrating information infrastructure at the district level. Training will be provided to align government information service structures with the digital reality, enhancing capacity where gaps exist.
Zahed expressed hope that coordinated efforts among the administration, media, and stakeholders will ensure a more open and effective flow of information in the country.
