Dhaka, May 11 (V7N)- The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has introduced a demerit point system for drivers in the capital, under which repeated traffic violations may lead to suspension or cancellation of driving licenses.
Under the new system, points will be automatically added to a driver’s record for each traffic offence. A driving license will be cancelled once a total of 12 demerit points are accumulated. In addition, licenses may also be suspended if points reach zero across 13 categories of traffic violations.
Previously, traffic police primarily issued fines against vehicle registration numbers, with vehicle owners bearing the penalties. However, under the revised system, penalties will now directly affect the driver’s license alongside fines.
DMP traffic officials said enforcement has been intensified at key intersections across Dhaka, with both manual cases and automated systems being used to detect violations. The demerit points linked to offences are now being recorded in drivers’ personal records.
According to DMP Additional Commissioner Md. Anisur Rahman, more than a thousand drivers have already lost points within the past two months. He said the main objective of the system is not punishment alone, but to improve public awareness and ensure road discipline.
Authorities also confirmed that drivers have the option to appeal deductions. If no further violations occur for six months, two points may be restored to the driver’s record.
However, officials acknowledged that many drivers are still unaware of the new demerit point system.
Road safety experts have welcomed the initiative but stressed that enforcement alone will not be enough. Saidur Rahman said roads must be properly lane-managed and drivers should receive formal training.
He added that most drivers in the country come from informal backgrounds, making systematic training and awareness programs essential for long-term road safety improvements.
