Dhaka, May 26 (V7N)- Sacrificial animal markets across the capital witnessed a low turnout of buyers on Monday (May 25) night, while continuous rainfall added to the suffering of cattle traders ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
Traders said intermittent rain throughout the night followed by heavy showers early Tuesday morning created muddy conditions in the markets, making it difficult to manage and protect the animals.
Despite the slow sales, sellers remain hopeful that trading activity will improve if the weather becomes favorable later in the day.
Market sources said most visitors were only checking prices and leaving without making purchases. Many buyers complained that cattle prices remain excessively high, while some alleged that additional charges are also being collected in the markets.
One buyer said the prices of cows have increased significantly compared to previous years. “The cow I bought for Tk 1.5 lakh last time is now being priced between Tk 2.5 lakh and Tk 3 lakh,” he alleged.
Another buyer complained about extra charges at cattle markets, claiming that around five percent additional fees are being collected from buyers without any protest.
On the other hand, traders said buyers are offering prices far below their investment costs, creating fears of heavy losses.
A cattle seller said many buyers are bargaining Tk 40,000 to Tk 50,000 below the asking price. According to him, traders are already facing potential losses of at least Tk 20,000 per animal.
Heavy rain has also worsened conditions inside the markets, where traders were seen struggling to manage cattle in muddy and waterlogged surroundings.
