DHAKA, May 27, (V7N) – President Mohammed Shahabuddin has paid deep tribute to Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin on his 49th death anniversary, describing him as the pioneer of modern art in Bangladesh whose creativity and humanism continue to inspire new generations.

In his message, the President said Zainul’s paintings vividly portray the struggles, suffering, and resilience of ordinary people alongside the beauty of rural Bengal. He noted that works such as “The Famine Sketches,” “Nobanna,” and “Manpura” earned worldwide recognition and remain timeless masterpieces reflecting the indomitable spirit of rural Bengal.

Shahabuddin highlighted Zainul’s role in establishing the Government Art Institute in 1948, now the Faculty of Fine Arts at Dhaka University, where he served as founding principal. He also mentioned Zainul’s efforts in founding the Folk Art Museum in Sonargaon and the Zainul Abedin Sangrahashala in Mymensingh.

Honored with the title “Shilpacharya” (Master of Arts), Zainul Abedin is remembered for his extraordinary artistic vision and humanistic spirit. The President expressed hope that his ideals and creativity would continue to inspire the younger generation to become more humane, culturally enriched, and patriotic.
