Dhaka, May 30 (V7N) — President Md. Sahabuddin has paid deep tribute to former President, BNP founder and Bir Uttam Ziaur Rahman on the occasion of his 45th martyrdom anniversary.
In a message issued on Saturday, the President respectfully recalled Ziaur Rahman's contributions as a valiant freedom fighter, promoter of multi-party democracy, architect of modern Bangladesh and visionary statesman.
The President said Ziaur Rahman was brutally martyred as a victim of a deep conspiracy against the country. He described him as an unforgettable figure in Bangladesh's history for his role in safeguarding the nation's independence, sovereignty and democratic advancement.
Md. Sahabuddin expressed his belief that Ziaur Rahman's active life, profound patriotism, uncompromising stance against corruption, commitment to justice and fairness, self-reliant development philosophy and personal ideals would continue to inspire future generations.
Recalling his role in the Liberation War, the President said that in the early hours of March 26, 1971, Ziaur Rahman called upon the nation to launch an armed struggle against the Pakistani occupation forces. His declaration and call to resistance inspired people across the country to actively participate in the War of Independence. For his exceptional courage and contribution to the Liberation War, he was awarded the gallantry title of Bir Uttam.
The Head of State further noted that after assuming responsibility for running the country, Ziaur Rahman established a multi-party democratic system, ensured freedom of speech and the press, and united the nation under the spirit of Bangladeshi nationalism.
He said Ziaur Rahman undertook various groundbreaking initiatives aimed at socio-economic development, increasing investment and exports, achieving self-reliance and improving the living standards of the people. According to the President, the late leader's 19-point programme served as a blueprint for building a production-oriented and self-reliant Bangladesh.
The President also highlighted Ziaur Rahman's balanced foreign policy, which he said helped protect Bangladesh's interests on the international stage. He further noted that the former President played an important role in expanding overseas employment opportunities for Bangladeshi workers, particularly in Middle Eastern countries.
Despite having a relatively short tenure in office, Ziaur Rahman guided the nation with patriotism, fairness, dedication and foresight, the President said, adding that his leadership remains a shining example in the country's history.
