New York, Jun 19 (V7N) – State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid Islam has called for more effective international action to protect civilians, uphold international humanitarian law and ensure the safe and sustainable repatriation of Rohingya refugees to their homeland in Myanmar.

He made the call while addressing the High-Level Panel Discussion of the 2026 ECOSOC Humanitarian Affairs Segment at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Friday.

In his remarks, the State Minister emphasized the importance of accountability for violations of international humanitarian law and highlighted the need for greater investment in conflict prevention efforts. He also stressed the importance of strengthening coordination among humanitarian, peacebuilding and development initiatives to address global crises more effectively.

Referring to emerging challenges in the digital era, Shama Obaid Islam expressed concern over the growing technology-based harassment and abuse targeting women and girls. He called for the establishment of a global platform to address such threats and promote a safer digital environment.

The State Minister also voiced deep concern over the adverse effects of the ongoing global funding crisis on Rohingya women and girls living in refugee camps. He urged the international community to maintain its support for Rohingya refugees and work collectively toward a durable solution to the crisis.

Reiterating Bangladesh's longstanding position, he called for the immediate, safe, voluntary and dignified return of the Rohingya people to Myanmar.

On the sidelines of the event, the State Minister paid a courtesy call on Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Dr. Nguyen Minh Vu. During the meeting, the two sides discussed matters of mutual interest, bilateral cooperation and opportunities to further strengthen collaboration in multilateral forums.

Both sides expressed interest in enhancing diplomatic engagement and expanding cooperation in areas of shared priority.
