Dhaka, Jul 02 (V7N) — Education Minister Dr. A.N.M. Ehsanul Haque Milon has called for enacting a law to prevent teachers from contesting local government elections, saying those who wish to enter electoral politics should resign from their teaching positions.

He made the remarks while speaking at a UNESCO event held at the InterContinental Dhaka on Thursday.

The minister said teachers should not participate in upcoming local government elections and urged the government to introduce legislation to that effect.

He noted that while every citizen has the constitutional right to vote, the Election Commission could introduce direct regulations governing the eligibility of teachers to contest elections without violating the law.

"If such a restriction is introduced, the education sector will be able to retain the teachers it needs," he said.

The Education Minister also highlighted the government's commitment to increasing investment in education, saying the Prime Minister has allocated 2 percent of GDP to the education sector and pledged to raise it to 5 percent in the future.

Referring to the Supreme Court's recent ruling, he added that the Appellate Division has removed all legal obstacles to the appointment of 32,000 head teachers in government primary schools, paving the way for the long-awaited recruitment process.
