Chattogram, Jul 06 (V7N) — Commerce and Industries Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir has said the government has launched a crash programme to address the ongoing energy crisis affecting the country's industrial sector, describing the problem as a long-standing challenge that cannot be resolved overnight.
He made the remarks after visiting several shipbreaking and ship recycling yards in Sitakunda, Chattogram, on Monday morning.
The minister said the energy shortage is a legacy issue inherited from previous administrations and emphasized that restoring a stable energy supply will require sustained efforts.
Highlighting reforms in the ship recycling sector, Abdul Muktadir said all shipbreaking businesses will be required to obtain green licences to ensure environmentally compliant operations.
"The government will extend all necessary support to businesses in obtaining green certification and is committed to restoring the former strength and reputation of Bangladesh's ship recycling industry," he said.
The minister also directed law enforcement agencies and the local administration to promptly address any obstacles faced by legitimate businesses and ensure a conducive environment for industrial operations.
Later, he held a meeting with leaders of the Bangladesh Ship Breaking and Recycling Industries Association to discuss the sector's current challenges and future development plans.
