Dhaka, Jul 06 (V7N) — State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit has said the country's power sector is facing challenges due to what he described as the flawed policies of the previous government, while reaffirming the current administration's commitment to expanding renewable energy and strengthening energy security.
He made the remarks at a press conference on the country's current power situation held at Bidyut Bhaban in Dhaka on Monday.
The state minister said the government's long-term objective is to achieve greater self-sufficiency in electricity generation by reducing dependence on conventional energy sources and increasing the share of renewable energy.
"Our goal is to become self-reliant in power generation, reduce dependency and place greater emphasis on renewable energy," he said.
Anindya Islam Amit expressed optimism that Bangladesh would be able to generate at least 10,000 megawatts of electricity from renewable sources by the end of the current government's tenure.
Addressing the issue of electricity distribution, he acknowledged the strategic importance of Dhaka but stressed that the government is committed to ensuring balanced development across the country.
"Dhaka naturally receives greater attention for various reasons, but we do not want disparities between urban and rural areas. While such differences cannot always be eliminated completely, we are making every effort to reduce them," he said.
The state minister also said the government is reviewing several private-sector power agreements to identify contracts where the country's interests may not have been adequately protected, indicating that necessary measures would be taken following the review.
