The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has expressed gratitude for a €1.5 million (approximately $1.6 million) donation from the French government, aimed at bolstering humanitarian aid and protection services for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.

Nearly one million Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, reliant on aid since their arrival in 2017, will benefit from this contribution. The funds will enhance refugee resilience through skills development and support climate action by providing clean cooking energy, which helps reduce deforestation and carbon emissions.

"France is a steadfast supporter of the Rohingya refugee response," stated Sumbul Rizvi, UNHCR representative in Bangladesh. "This generous contribution will support the humanitarian and protection needs of the Rohingya refugees, including their education and skills development. It will also aid host communities in Cox’s Bazar by promoting environmental rehabilitation and significantly reducing CO2 emissions."

Marie Masdupuy, the French ambassador to Bangladesh, reiterated France's commitment to the Rohingya cause. "France salutes Bangladesh for hosting nearly one million Rohingya," she said. "We will continue to advocate for better refugee opportunities, focusing on their safe, voluntary, dignified, and sustainable repatriation. Our priorities include addressing camp security and preventing forced returns to Burma, as well as improving livelihoods for the Rohingya."

In 2024, humanitarian agencies have appealed for over $852 million to support nearly 1.35 million people, including Rohingya refugees and nearby Bangladeshi communities. However, by mid-year, the Joint Response Plan is less than 30% funded. UNHCR hopes France's donation will inspire other donors to address the funding shortfalls and fulfill pledges made at the Global Refugee Forum to support the Rohingya's self-reliance and ease the burden on Bangladesh.
