Dhaka, August 5— Following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the ensuing political upheaval, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called for calm and patience across the nation. In a message delivered on Monday, he emphasized that the victory of the students has been achieved and stressed the importance of moving forward with composure.
"The greatest need now is to move forward with patience and calmness," Mirza Fakhrul stated, urging citizens to remain peaceful in the aftermath of the government’s fall. The BNP leader's appeal for calm came shortly after a meeting with Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman, which he described as constructive. The meeting included various political party leaders and dignitaries, with BNP representatives Fakhrul and Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas in attendance.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina departed Bangladesh, resigning amid widespread protests. She and her family, including her younger sister Sheikh Rehana, left Dhaka aboard a military helicopter from Bangabhaban at 2:30 PM. The AFP news agency reported that they have relocated to a safe place.
In an address to the nation, Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman announced the formation of an interim government to manage the country. He assured the public, "I have taken responsibility for people's lives. You will not be disappointed. All your demands will be fulfilled."
General Waqar-uz-Zaman also emphasized the need for cooperation from the populace and vowed that justice would be served for any murders or injustices committed during the recent turmoil. The interim government aims to stabilize the country and address the grievances that led to the mass protests and political crisis.
