Dhaka, Aug 22 (V7N): The United Nations has stressed the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of journalists in Bangladesh, advocating for their freedom to work without fear.

"The safety and well-being of journalists anywhere in the world is of critical importance for any country, especially for countries going through a transition," stated Stephane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, during a media briefing on August 21.

His comments came in response to a journalist’s query regarding recent attacks on East West Media Group and the subsequent vandalism.

Dujarric emphasized the need for journalists to be allowed to carry out their duties and called for accountability for those who perpetrate violence against them.

The attack on the East West Media Group office occurred on Monday afternoon in Dhaka’s Bashundhara Residential Area, carried out by unidentified miscreants.

The attackers broke into the Radio Capital office, where they caused significant damage, destroying tables, computers, and air conditioners in the building.

East West Media Group's offices house several major media outlets, including Kaler Kantho, Bangladesh Pratidin, Daily Sun, BanglaNews 24, News 24, T Sports, and Capital Radio, all located in three adjacent buildings.

In addition to the property damage inside, the group also vandalized 20-25 cars parked on the premises.
