Dhaka, Nov 27 (V7N) – Despite a surge in the supply of winter vegetables, prices in Dhaka markets have risen, with many varieties increasing by around Tk 20 per kilogram compared to two weeks ago, and some doubling in cost. Onion prices have slightly decreased, while green chili prices have halved. Prices of eggs, chicken, and other daily essentials remain stable. Concerns about potential edible oil price hikes are circulating among traders.
Vegetable wholesalers attribute the price hike to higher costs in production areas, which has impacted both wholesale and retail markets. In Agargaon, Mohakhali, and Karwan Bazar, the price of beans has jumped from Tk 50–60 per kg to Tk 100–120, while ridge gourd and sponge gourd are now selling at Tk 70–80 per kg. Pointed gourd and patol have increased from Tk 40–50 to Tk 50–70 per kg. Medium-sized cauliflower and cabbage are selling at Tk 50–60 per kg.
Green chili, however, dropped to Tk 100–120 per kg from last week’s Tk 180–200. New potatoes are being sold at Tk 140–150 per kg, with older potatoes increasing slightly to Tk 22–25 per kg.
Eggs and chicken prices have remained stable, with farm eggs at Tk 120 per dozen and broiler chicken at Tk 160–170 per kg. Sonali breed chicken is selling at Tk 260–290 per kg. Fish and meat markets show little change.
Retailers report that soybean oil may rise by Tk 5–6 per liter, although supply remains adequate. Onion prices have declined further to Tk 100–105 per kg, while new leafy onions are available at Tk 70–80 per kg. Import of onions has been considered but will not proceed to protect farmers’ interests, according to Agriculture and Home Affairs Advisor Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.
