Middle East, Dec 21 (V7N) — The crescent moon of Rajab, the seventh month in the Islamic lunar calendar, has been sighted in several countries in the Middle East, heralding the approach of the sacred month of Ramadan. Following Rajab, the month of Sha’ban will commence, which is then followed by Ramadan. If Rajab consists of 29 days and Sha’ban 30 days this year, the holy month of Ramadan will arrive in 60 or 61 days, with the exact date to be confirmed after sighting the new crescent moon. This report was confirmed by Gulf News.
Authorities in Saudi Arabia and most Middle Eastern countries indicate that Ramadan is likely to begin on February 18 next year. In such a scenario, countries in South Asia, including Bangladesh, are expected to observe the first day of Ramadan on February 19. However, if the crescent is not sighted, the start of Ramadan will be postponed by one day.
The Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) reported that the National Moon Sighting Committee, led by Religious Advisor A F M Khalid Hossain, will convene on Sunday, December 21, to officially announce whether the Rajab crescent has been sighted in Bangladesh.
The Islamic Foundation has requested that if the Rajab crescent is sighted anywhere in the country, people report it immediately by calling 02-41053294, 02-226640510, or 02-223383397, or inform the respective District Commissioner or Upazila Executive Officer.
Traditionally, the months of Rajab, Dhu al-Qi’dah, Dhu al-Hijjah, and Muharram hold special status in Islamic culture, during which warfare is prohibited. Historically, local communities in the Arab world refrained from conflicts and unlawful activities and dedicated time for rest and spiritual reflection during these months.
Among these, the 26th night of Rajab holds particular significance for Muslims. On this sacred night, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is believed to have ascended through the seven heavens and met Allah, returning with guidance on the five daily prayers for the Muslim Ummah.
The sighting of the Rajab crescent thus marks the beginning of spiritual preparation and anticipation for Ramadan, the holiest month in Islam.
