Panchagarh, Jan 04 (V7N) — The intensity of winter has sharply increased in the northern district of Panchagarh, with temperatures dropping to single digits, adding to the challenges faced by low-income residents. The Tentulia Meteorological Observatory recorded the district's lowest temperature today at 9.4 degrees Celsius at 9 a.m., with humidity at 86% and a mild cold wave prevailing.
Dense fog and cold winds from the north have exacerbated the chill, and dew drops continue to fall, further contributing to the harsh weather. However, some respite was observed as sunlight became visible from the morning.
This weather follows a recent cold trend, with the lowest temperature recorded at 8.3 degrees Celsius last Friday and 8.4 degrees Celsius on December 13. Panchagarh, located near the Himalayas, is known for experiencing the coldest weather in Bangladesh, particularly when icy winds from the mountains sweep over the region.
Tea workers in Tentulia Upazila are particularly vulnerable during this cold spell. Emon Islam, a tea worker from Aziznagar, shared, "We are harvesting tea leaves in this bitter winter, but it is becoming increasingly difficult to work. No one checks on us. If we received winter clothing, it would be a great help."
Jitendranath Roy, officer-in-charge of the Tentulia Meteorological Observatory, confirmed the ongoing mild cold wave and warned of an increase in cold intensity in the coming week. "The lowest temperature recorded today was 9.4 degrees Celsius, and the cold is expected to intensify further," he said.
As Panchagarh residents brace for harsher conditions, calls for support, including warm clothing and relief measures, grow louder to alleviate the struggles of vulnerable communities in the region.
