Madaripur, Nov 24 (V7N) — Former Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan and former Madaripur-3 Member of Parliament Abdus Sobhan Mia Golap have been sent to jail in connection with two murder cases related to the student uprising. The order was issued this morning by Judge Sajid ul Hasan Chowdhury of the Madaripur Senior Judicial Magistrate Court.
Both leaders were brought to the court under heavy police guard from Madaripur Jail. Following a bail plea from their lawyers, the court, after a hearing, rejected the applications and directed the two Awami League leaders to remain in custody.
Shajahan Khan, an Awami League presidium member and former MP of Madaripur-1, along with Abdus Sobhan Golap, the party’s central publicity and publication secretary, stand accused in the murder cases of Tawheed Sannyamat and Dipta De. The two victims were killed during the quota reform movement that escalated into a violent clash.
Three layers of security were in place to ensure the safe transfer of the accused to the court. Both leaders had been shifted from Dhaka’s Keraniganj Jail to Madaripur Jail last Thursday before being presented in court today.
The quota reform movement, which called for changes to Bangladesh’s public service recruitment system, led to widespread protests and violent confrontations, resulting in multiple casualties, including the deaths of Tawheed and Dipta.
This high-profile case continues to draw significant public and political attention, with further legal proceedings expected in the coming weeks.
