Dhaka, Nov 28 (V7N)- Suspended Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Tapasi Tabassum Urmi has been granted bail after surrendering to Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Imran Ahmed’s court in a defamation case. The bail was granted following a hearing on Thursday morning.

Tapasi Tabassum Urmi appeared before the court at approximately 10:30 AM, accompanied by her legal counsel. Despite opposition from the plaintiff, the court granted her bail after hearing arguments from both sides.

The defamation case was filed by Abu Hanif, a higher council member and media coordinator of the People's Rights Council, over alleged negative remarks made by Tapasi regarding the killing of Abu Sayeed, a student of Begum Rokeya University. Abu Sayeed was killed during an anti-discrimination student protest in Rangpur on July 16, which sparked widespread controversy.

Abu Hanif alleged that Tapasi's comments defamed the victim and undermined the legitimacy of the student movement. The case was accepted by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Zakir Hossain on October 8, with a summons issued for Tapasi to appear in court on November 28.

Tapasi Tabassum Urmi’s suspension from her administrative role was reportedly linked to this controversy. During the court proceedings, the plaintiff strongly opposed the bail, arguing that her remarks had caused significant emotional and reputational harm.

However, Tapasi’s defense counsel emphasized her cooperation with the legal process and argued that bail was appropriate in this case. The court ultimately decided in her favor.

This case highlights ongoing tensions surrounding the July 16 student movement and its aftermath. Further developments are awaited as the legal proceedings continue.
