Dhaka, Jan 20 (V7N) — The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has ordered the imprisonment of three police officers in connection with separate murder cases during public protests and student movements. The tribunal, led by Chairman Justice Golam Mortuza Majumder, issued the orders on Monday afternoon following prosecution applications.

1. Assistant Commissioner of Police Tanjil Ahmed: Arrested in the case of the killing of Imam Hossain Taim, a college student, during the anti-discrimination student movement in Jatrabari on July 20 last year.

2. Police Constable Akram Hossain: Accused in the murder of college student Md. Hridoy in Konabari, Gazipur, on August 5 last year.

3. Police Constable Hossain Ali: Arrested in a separate murder case in the Uttara area.

On January 13, the tribunal had directed the production of the accused officers before the court. They were presented on Monday morning. The tribunal subsequently ordered their imprisonment, citing the severity of the charges.

Additionally, a hearing is ongoing regarding an application filed by former NTMC Director General Ziaul Ahsan. The application challenges the tribunal's jurisdiction to conduct the trials of these cases.

The cases involve incidents where law enforcement actions led to the deaths of protesters and students, sparking public outrage. Imam Hossain Taim and Md. Hridoy were participating in demonstrations when they were allegedly killed due to excessive police force.

This ruling marks a significant step in addressing accountability within law enforcement, particularly in incidents involving civilian casualties during protests.
