Dhaka, Mar 04 (V7N) – The Supreme Court’s Appellate Division will deliver its verdict on BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and businessman Gias Uddin Al Mamun’s money laundering case on Thursday (March 6). A four-member appeal bench, led by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, set the date on Tuesday.

This high-profile case is considered one of the most discussed corruption cases against Tarique Rahman. Initially, a trial court acquitted him, but the presiding judge allegedly faced pressure and was forced to leave the country temporarily. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) later appealed the verdict, leading to a seven-year prison sentence and a Tk 20 crore fine for Tarique Rahman in the High Court.

On December 10, the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division temporarily suspended the sentence. Following the political shift of August 5, 2024, Tarique Rahman’s legal team, led by Barrister Kaiser Kamal, initiated further legal proceedings, along with co-accused Gias Uddin Al Mamun, seeking acquittal.

Tarique Rahman, who has been living in exile, faced 84 cases during the military-backed caretaker government and subsequent Awami League rule. He has so far won 40 cases, while three more convictions remain under review.

The upcoming verdict is expected to have significant political and legal implications.
