Dhaka, Mar 16 (V7N) – The High Court has upheld the death sentences of 20 convicts and life sentences of five others in the murder case of BUET student Abrar Fahad.

A bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain delivered the verdict on Sunday (March 16), after concluding the hearing on February 24, when the case was placed under Conditional Awaiting Verdict (CAV) status.

The state prosecution was represented by Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman along with Deputy Attorney General Md. Jasim Sarkar, Khandaker Bahar Rumi, Noor Muhammad Azmi, Russell Ahmed, and Assistant Attorney Generals Abdul Jabbar Jewel, Laboni Akhter, Tanvir Prodhan, and Sumaiya Binte Aziz.

The defense was led by senior lawyer SM Shahjahan, along with Azizur Rahman Dulu, Masud Hasan Chowdhury, and Mohammad Shishir Monir.

According to legal procedures, death sentences handed down by a trial court must be reviewed by the High Court. The death reference in this case was sent to the High Court on January 6, 2022. Additionally, the convicts filed appeals challenging their sentences.

On December 8, 2021, Dhaka's Speedy Trial Tribunal-1, presided over by Judge Abu Zafar Md. Kamruzzaman, sentenced 20 individuals to death and five to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of BUET student Abrar Fahad in October 2019.
