Dhaka, Apr 17 (V7N) – Model Meghna Alam, accused of operating a high-profile fraud scheme involving foreign diplomats, has been formally shown arrested in a case filed at Dhanmondi Police Station. She was produced before the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on Thursday morning, where the investigating officer sought permission to show her arrested in connection with the case.

Following a hearing, Metropolitan Magistrate Masum Mia granted the request, officially showing Meghna arrested. The case alleges that she was part of a syndicate that used attractive women to lure foreign ambassadors and diplomats into deceptive relationships, ultimately exploiting them.

In the same case, the court has also granted a 5-day remand for Meghna's associate, Dewan Shamir, to facilitate further interrogation.

Meghna Alam had previously been arrested on the night of April 9 under the Special Powers Act, a move that sparked widespread controversy and criticism for bypassing standard legal procedures. Critics questioned why she was not initially arrested under a specific case if there were clear allegations against her.

Prominent legal expert and government advisor Professor Asif Nazrul weighed in on the issue on April 13, stating that Meghna's arrest under the Special Powers Act was procedurally flawed, although he acknowledged that certain allegations against her were indeed serious.

Amid growing scrutiny, Rezaul Karim Mallick, then-Chief of the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, was removed from his post on April 13, further fueling speculation about irregularities surrounding the arrest.

The case continues to draw attention due to its high-profile nature and alleged involvement of foreign diplomats, raising questions about both the exploitation of diplomatic circles and the procedural integrity of law enforcement agencies.
