Dhaka, Oct 21 (V7N) – The Fifth Money Loan Court in Dhaka has fined advocate Jagbandhu Majumdar for contempt of court after he disrupted judicial proceedings by standing on the dais, slapping it, and intimidating the presiding judge. The court ordered a fine of Tk 1,000 with a default sentence of 10 days’ imprisonment if unpaid, according to sources.

The incident occurred on October 12 during a hearing in a case filed by Bank Asia against Khondkar Shamsul Alam, owner of Aviana Tours and Travels. Majumdar, representing the defendant, failed to submit the required deposit slip as ordered by the court. Subsequently, he allegedly climbed the dais and raised irrelevant matters from another case, attempting to confront the judge aggressively and displaying a threatening demeanor. His actions disrupted court proceedings, prompting other lawyers present to intervene and remove him from the courtroom.

In the same case, the second defendant had falsely claimed in a July 24 affidavit that a deposit of Tk 4.40 crore had been made, for which the court imposed a fine of Tk 5,000 after the claim was proven untrue.

During the hearing, Majumdar submitted a request for unconditional apology and sought exemption from the show-cause notice, but the court rejected it. Judge Mujahidur Rahman emphasized that allowing contempt without penalty undermines the rule of law and judicial authority. Granting the lawyer’s apology could encourage further courtroom disorder, the order noted.

A similar precedent was cited from January 2012, when Advocate Mohammad Selim was fined Tk 100 by the then Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge, Md. Akhtaruzzaman, for inappropriate behavior in court.
