Dhaka, Oct 21 (V7N) – India has begun the process of renewing its electricity export agreement with Bangladesh. NTPC Electricity Corporation Limited has initiated steps to extend the supply of power from its Palatana plant in Tripura to Bangladesh, according to a recent confirmation from a NTPC official.

The existing agreement between Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) and Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) for 100 megawatts of electricity is set to expire in March 2026. Ahead of the expiration, Bangladesh has expressed interest in renewing the contract, prompting India to take proactive measures, sources at NTPC said.

Officials from NTPC Electricity Corporation held a meeting in New Delhi on Thursday with Devashish Bose, Managing Director of TSECL, to discuss the renewal. In an interview with PTI, Bose stated, “We are ready to renew the agreement with BPDB.”

Bose added that TSECL currently supplies an average of 85 megawatts of electricity daily to Bangladesh, which will be increased to 100 megawatts from November. Following the proper procedure, NTPC will hold discussions with Bangladeshi authorities. If approved, power supply to the neighboring country will continue seamlessly.

When asked about potential electricity exports to Nepal, Bose said, “Supplying power to Bangladesh is more efficient. Currently, our focus is on expanding the electricity purchase agreement with Bangladesh.”

This development highlights the growing energy cooperation between India and Bangladesh, strengthening regional connectivity and ensuring stable electricity supply to support economic growth.
