Dhaka, Oct 23 (V7N) — Under the Cyber Security Ordinance, an additional charge for hurting religious sentiments has been added against Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Sreesanth Roy, who was arrested in a case filed by Chawkbazar Police Station. He was sent to jail after his bail application was rejected.
The order was issued by Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbubur Rahman on Thursday (October 23) following a hearing. Investigating officer SI Shahjahan Siraj had requested the addition of Section 295A of the Cyber Security Ordinance. The court granted the request, but rejected the bail as the accused’s lawyers were not present.
According to the complaint, Sreesanth, using the pseudonym “Weekly Service 923”, wrote and posted articles and comments on Muslim women and Islam from June 8 to September 7 this year. The posts reportedly contained obscene and offensive content, provoking religious sentiments.
BUET security worker Md. Afghan Hossain, the complainant, filed the case at Chawkbazar Police Station, alleging that Sreesanth’s posts caused hurt to students and devout Muslims. Following investigation, the accused’s identity was confirmed, leading to his arrest.
