Dhaka, Nov 13 (V7N) — Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, who appeared as a public witness in the crimes against humanity case linked to the July–August movement, has relied on the statements of other defendants to defend himself, according to state-appointed lawyer Md. Amir Hossain.

Speaking at a briefing following the announcement of the verdict date on Thursday (November 13), the defense counsel expressed optimism that his clients would be acquitted.

“Various important information has been presented to the tribunal through witnesses. However, controversy has arisen regarding the documentary evidence presented during the hearings. As a result, I hope my defendants will be acquitted,” Hossain said.

He added that the state prosecution did not obstruct or interfere in the legal proceedings, though the absence of the accused created certain limitations in the defense process.

Earlier, at 12:09 p.m., a three-member judicial panel led by Tribunal-1 Chairman Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder set Monday (November 17) as the date for announcing the verdict in the case. The other members of the tribunal are Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Justice Md. Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.

The case involves three accused, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun. Among them, Mamun has testified as a witness, while Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan remain absconding.
