Dhaka, Jun 01 (V7N) – A Dhaka court has formally framed charges against Sohel Rana and his wife Swapna Akhter in the murder case of eight-year-old Ramisa Akhter, paving the way for the trial to begin. The court has scheduled the recording of witness testimony to start on Tuesday, June 2.
The order was issued on Monday by Judge Masrur Salekin of the Dhaka Metropolitan Child Violence Prevention Tribunal after hearing arguments from both sides.
The accused, Sohel Rana and Swapna Akhter, were produced before the court during the hearing. Special Public Prosecutor Azizur Rahman Dulu argued in favor of framing charges and presented details of the child's murder before the tribunal.
Following the hearing, the court found sufficient grounds to proceed with the case and formally framed charges against the two accused, marking the official commencement of the trial process.
Earlier, on May 24, the tribunal took cognizance of the charge sheet submitted by investigators against Sohel Rana and Swapna Akhter in connection with the murder.
The case drew nationwide attention after the body of eight-year-old Ramisa Akhter was recovered from a residence in the capital's Pallabi area on May 19. The tragic incident sparked widespread public outrage and demands for swift justice.
The following day, law enforcement authorities arrested the prime accused, Sohel Rana, from Narayanganj. During the investigation, he reportedly gave a confessional statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure before a magistrate.
Subsequently, the court ordered that the accused be sent to jail pending further legal proceedings.
With charges now framed, the case has entered the trial stage, and the tribunal is expected to begin examining witnesses from Tuesday as the judicial process moves forward.
