Dhaka, September 4 — Two former Inspectors General of Police (IGP), AKM Shahidul Haque and Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, have been remanded in custody following their arrests in connection with separate murder cases. The Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate, Mo Akhtaruzzaman, ordered the remand after a hearing early on Wednesday morning.

Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, who served as IGP until the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government on August 5, 2024, has been remanded for eight days. He is implicated in the death of grocery shopkeeper Abu Saeed in Mohammadpur on July 19. The case, filed on August 13, names six accused, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

AKM Shahidul Haque, who served as IGP from December 31, 2014, to January 31, 2018, has been remanded for seven days. He is accused in connection with the death of 45-year-old businessman Abdul Wadud in Dhaka's New Market area on July 19.

Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun was arrested after he expressed a desire to surrender while in army custody. He was subsequently taken into police custody on Tuesday night. Mamun’s tenure as IGP was marked by significant unrest, with accusations against him for leading police forces in the indiscriminate firing on protesters during the anti-discrimination student movement.

AKM Shahidul Haque was arrested from Sector 16 in Uttara. After retiring as IGP, Haque attempted to secure an Awami League nomination for the Shariatpur-1 seat in the 12th national election, but he was unsuccessful.

The arrests and subsequent remands are part of ongoing investigations as the authorities seek to restore law and order in the wake of recent unrest across the country.
