Dhaka, Dec 25 (V7N)— Protests and human chains were held by workers' unions in Dhaka today, demanding justice for the brutal killing of seven sailors who were attacked while resting on a cargo ship in Chandpur’s Majhir Char. The demonstrators called for the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible for the heinous crime.

The protest took place at Sadar Ghat at 10 a.m., organized by the Ship Workers' Party and the United Workers' Council. The event was presided over by Matiar Rahman, President of the Ship Workers' Party Employees' Union, with Advocate Shimul Biswas, Chief Coordinator of the Ship Workers' Party, addressing the gathering as the chief guest.

Anwar Hossain, the main speaker, along with other prominent figures such as Sramik Dal Vice President Abdur Rahim Box Dudu, Treasurer Rafiqul Islam, and Publicity Secretary Manjurul Islam Manju, spoke passionately about the need for swift justice. Leaders from various workers' unions, including Dhaka Metropolitan (South) Convener Sumon Bhuiyan and Member Secretary Badrul Alam Sabuj, also voiced their concerns.

Speakers called for an immediate and thorough investigation into the sailors' murder, emphasizing the tragic loss and the need for heightened security measures to protect workers. They urged the government to ensure the safety of all workers in Bangladesh, including those in the shipping industry.

Transport workers, wharf workers, harkas workers, and rickshaw workers joined in solidarity, underscoring the shared concerns for workplace safety across all sectors.

The protest highlighted the vulnerability of workers and demanded immediate government intervention to prevent such incidents in the future.
