Rangamati, July 26 (V7N) — A 25-year-old man died in Rangamati after allegedly being attacked with a sharp weapon by his parents following a family dispute linked to his long-standing drug addiction. Police have detained the victim’s parents in connection with the incident.
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon at a rented house in Asambasti area of Rangamati town. The deceased was identified as Sakibul Islam, the elder son of autorickshaw driver Rafiqul Islam and homemaker Rakhai Islam.
According to family members and relatives, Sakibul had struggled with drug addiction for several years. His family reportedly sent him to rehabilitation centres multiple times in an effort to help him return to a normal life. Relatives said his father had spent around Tk 2.5 lakh several months ago for his rehabilitation treatment, but he allegedly returned to drug use after coming back home.
Family members and local residents said Sakibul’s behaviour had caused prolonged tension within the family. They alleged that disputes frequently occurred over his drug use and other activities. Police and local sources also alleged that he had been involved in drug-related activities and other offences. They said he had previously been arrested and sent to jail in connection with a case, and allegedly became involved in similar activities again after receiving bail.
Police said an argument broke out between Sakibul and his parents on Saturday afternoon. At one stage, the situation became tense, and his mother allegedly attacked him with a sharp weapon, causing a serious injury to his neck.
Local resident Saiful Islam later rescued the injured Sakibul and took him to Rangamati General Hospital.
Dr Fuad Hasan, a physician at the hospital’s emergency department, said Sakibul was brought in with a severe cut injury to his neck. Despite receiving initial medical treatment, he died due to excessive blood loss.
Rangamati Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jasim Uddin said police visited the scene after receiving information about the incident and detained the victim’s parents for questioning. He added that legal procedures and further investigation were underway.
Family members said Sakibul’s parents had made repeated efforts to help him overcome his addiction. They said his father, despite limited financial resources, spent a significant amount of money on treatment and rehabilitation but failed to bring him back to a stable life.
The incident has created widespread concern in the area, as a family dispute reportedly linked to long-term addiction ended with the death of their son. Police said the exact circumstances surrounding the death would be confirmed after a proper investigation.
