Rangamati, Nov 22 (V7N) – The Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) seized a large quantity of Indian cigarettes during a special operation in Nalbonia, Khedarmara Union, Baghaichhari Upazila, Rangamati, based on a tip-off. The operation was conducted around 10:00 pm on Friday by personnel of the 27 BGB Marishya Zone. Authorities recovered 1,450 packs (14 cartons) of Indian cigarettes and an abandoned mini truck bearing registration number Dhaka Metro–Na–159382.
According to officials, under the direction of Zone Commander Lt. Colonel Md. Zahidul Islam Zahid, a special patrol team led by Assistant Director AD Md. Hafizur Rahman positioned itself in the area. The abandoned truck was found on a remote hilly path and, upon inspection, officers discovered the concealed Indian cigarettes valued at approximately Tk 30 lakh.
Lt. Colonel Md. Zahidul Islam Zahid stated, “We are committed to preventing illegal smuggling in the hilly regions. Regular operations will continue to keep the border areas free from smuggling.”
Smuggling of Indian counterfeit and illegal goods, including cigarettes, bidis, drugs, and other commodities, has been on the rise in Rangamati’s remote border areas. Local sources report that some influential individuals and organized syndicates frequently use hilly routes to transport these goods, causing revenue losses for the government and an influx of counterfeit products into local markets, posing public health risks.
The recent seizure highlights that, despite changes in carriers, smuggling syndicates remain active. The BGB confirmed that border monitoring will be strengthened and additional patrols deployed as needed to curb illegal activities.
No arrests have been made so far. The truck and confiscated goods will be handed over to customs authorities following legal procedures.
Concerned experts stress that increasing coordinated operations by joint forces is crucial to safeguarding border security, stabilizing local markets, and protecting the national economy from rising smuggling activities in the hilly regions.
