Ukhiya, Nov 17 (V7N) – A Rohingya man died early Monday after being shot during an armed clash between two rival groups at the Kutupalong Registered Refugee Camp in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar. The incident occurred near E-Block of the camp at dawn, prompting the deployment of additional police forces across the area.
The victim, Delwar Hossain, son of Bashir Ahmed and a resident of C-Block, was known to be an active member of the Munna group. According to camp sources, a violent confrontation broke out late Sunday night between members of the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Organization (ARSO) and the Munna group in C-Block. Both sides reportedly exchanged around ten rounds of gunfire. Delwar was struck in the right thigh after assailants fired two rounds targeting him.
Local Rohingya residents initially rushed the injured man to the GK Hospital near the camp. As his condition worsened, he was referred to Ukhiya Upazila Health Complex and later transferred to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, where he died while receiving treatment.
Sources said the attack was linked to an earlier dispute in which members of the Farid group assaulted the son of a man named Shafique two days prior. In retaliation, Shafique and six to seven associates allegedly opened fire indiscriminately at Munna group members—Matu, Farid, Delwar, and Adda—firing at least five to six rounds, leaving Delwar critically injured.
Hearing the gunshots, a patrol team from the Kutupalong police camp rushed to the scene, but the attackers had already fled. No arrests were made.
Ukhiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ziaul Haque confirmed the death. The body was recovered and sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy. The shooting has heightened fear among camp residents and renewed concerns over the growing influence of armed criminal groups inside the Rohingya camps.
