Teknaf, Oct 05 (V7N) – Two people were injured, one with a gunshot wound, when two rival groups clashed and exchanged gunfire over a dispute involving local dominance in Teknaf of Cox’s Bazar on Sunday.

The incident occurred around noon in the Sikdar Para area of Sabrang Union, according to local residents.

The injured were Helal, 25, son of Moulvi Abdul Gafur of Sikdar Para, and Md Harun, 29, son of former union parishad member Sabbir, from the same area.

Residents said Abdul Gafur’s family and the Alu Gola family of neighbouring Panchchhari Para have been involved in a longstanding dispute. They said the two sides had previously clashed and exchanged gunfire several times over local influence.

According to local sources, an argument between the two sides on Sunday escalated into an attack allegedly led by a man named Tofael. Helal was shot during the incident, while Harun was also injured.

Local sources said one side is currently led by Tofael, the brother of Union Parishad member Shamsu, while the other is led by Russell, son of Abdul Gafur.

There are also allegations that members of both groups are involved in drug trafficking. However, no statement was available from either side regarding the allegations.

Dr Mariam Islam, an emergency department physician at Teknaf Upazila Health Complex, said the two injured men were brought to the hospital around 2:20pm.

“After providing initial treatment, we referred them to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for better treatment. Helal sustained a gunshot wound to the right side of his waist, while Harun suffered injuries to his head and left hand,” she said.

Teknaf Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Saiful Islam confirmed that a clash had taken place between the two sides.

“Police have been deployed at the scene,” he said.
