Bagerhat, Jan 14, (V7N):  A widow's family in Morelganj, Bagerhat, is facing harassment and threats after filing a case regarding an attack on their home. For six months, they have been enduring hardship, struggling to live a peaceful life.

At a press conference held at Morelganj Press Club on Monday, Shyamoli Begum, a resident of Bhaijoara village in Ward 6 of Morelganj Municipality, alleged that her home was attacked and destroyed by a group of 20–25 individuals led by her sister, Laki Yasmin, and others on the night of July 5.

According to Shyamoli, she had purchased 16.5 decimals of land 20 years ago, where she built her home. Following the death of her husband four years ago, her sister, Laki Yasmin, and brother-in-law, Abul Kalam Molla, began targeting the property. On the fateful night, the attackers broke into her home, tied her and her two children up, and looted cash, gold ornaments, and furniture worth Tk 4.5 lakh after vandalizing the property.

Shyamoli contacted the emergency service 999, and police arrived at the scene, but the perpetrators had fled by then.

The next day, Shyamoli filed a case with Morelganj Police Station against 19 individuals, including Laki Yasmin and Mosharaf Sheikh. Police arrested three of the accused, who were later sent to jail. However, after securing bail, the accused began pressuring Shyamoli to withdraw the case.

During the press conference, Shyamoli alleged that influential individuals with political connections were trying to manipulate the case. She sought justice and appealed for intervention from higher authorities to ensure her family's safety and their right to live peacefully.

Morelganj Police Station’s investigating officer, SI Bhobotosh Roy, confirmed that three suspects had been arrested and that the investigation is in its final stages. "The charge sheet will be submitted to the court soon," he said.

This incident underscores the plight of victims who face retaliation after seeking justice and calls for stronger support from the authorities to uphold the law.
