Pabna, Jan 21, (V7N) - Members of Hizb ut-Tahrir in Pabna held a press conference and human chain to protest the recent attack on their members, demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of those involved.
On Monday, January 20, 2025, the protest took place at Café Pabna in the afternoon, followed by a human chain on Abdul Hamid Road in front of the Pabna Press Club. The protesters warned of a larger movement if the culprits are not arrested soon.
In a written statement at the press conference, Mahatab Uddin, President of the Pabna District branch of Hizb ut-Tahrir, claimed that on the night of January 19, 2025, members of Hizb ut-Tahrir were attacked in the Nafsar Bhatta area of Char Ghoshpur in Hemayetpur Union. A group of around 40 armed assailants, led by Munna Pramanik, the son of a deceased man from Bajitpur, attacked the members with guns, machetes, Chinese knives, rods, and other local weapons. At least 10 members were injured, with one critically wounded and fighting for life at Pabna General Hospital.
He further stated that a similar attack took place in the same area on August 23, 2022, when a group of 40-50 armed assailants attacked their office, killing Sujan Mondal. While a case was filed, the accused were released on bail and have been pressuring the victims to withdraw the case. The perpetrators, with political backing, have been threatening the families of the victims for over a year, even resorting to violence at times.
Taking advantage of the unstable situation after August 5, 2024, the accused attacked and looted the house of the complainant, Selim Sheikh. Despite filing a General Diary (GD) with the local police, the attacks continued, with another assault taking place on January 19, 2025.
The press conference was attended by Shamsuzjaman Milon, Regional President of Hizb ut-Tahrir, Khulna; Mahatab Uddin, Pabna District President; former District President Selim Sheikh; and General Secretary Ramzan Ali.
Pabna Sadar Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdus Salam said, "Upon hearing about the incident, we immediately went to the scene. Extra police forces have been deployed, and some injured individuals have been admitted to Pabna General Hospital. A case is being processed, and we will take action against those responsible."
