Jamalpur, Mar 04 (V7N) – A transport strike has entered its second day in Jamalpur, causing severe disruption for commuters, including office workers and students. The strike, enforced by the Transport Workers Union, comes in protest against an alleged attack on workers during a road blockade organized by students of the anti-discrimination student movement.
Since Tuesday morning, all bus services, including long-distance and internal routes, have been suspended, paralyzing transportation across the district.
On Monday, members of the anti-discrimination student movement staged a road blockade and human chain in Jamalpur, demanding the closure of all Rajib Paribahan bus services. The protest, supported by local students and the public, was aimed at removing unfit vehicles from the roads and ensuring that only licensed drivers operate buses.
However, tensions escalated when a clash broke out between students and transport workers, leading to a chase and counter-chase situation.
In response to the incident, transport workers called for an indefinite strike starting Monday, citing concerns over their safety. They condemned the blockade as an unnecessary disruption and insisted that bus operations would remain suspended until worker security is guaranteed.
Due to the strike, all long-distance buses connecting Jamalpur-Mymensingh-Dhaka and Jamalpur-Tangail-Dhaka have come to a halt, severely affecting travel across the region.
Leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement reaffirmed their stance, emphasizing that unfit vehicles must be removed from the roads and drivers must possess valid licenses. They argue that unsafe transportation conditions pose a serious risk to public safety.
While authorities are yet to mediate a resolution, commuters continue to suffer, awaiting a breakthrough in the standoff between transport workers and student activists.
